Broccoli, DeCisso

An Italian heirloom broccoli that first produces one medium sized head followed by many smaller side shoots.  Shoots are tender with a sweet, nutty flavor.  Will produce all summer if heads are harvested before they flower.  It’s a big plant that needs a lot of compost and full sun.

Cabbage, Caraflex

A small, cone shaped cabbage good for fresh eating, or hanging out in your crisper for a few months. Heads will be 1 - 2 pounds.  Plants need full sun and plenty of compost.

Cucumber, Lemon

A yellow heirloom variety that looks like a lemon and has great flavor. Plants yield late and are prone to disease -- but it's a very special cucumber when they work!  Plants spread and can be trellised upward to save space.   Needs even watering, full sun and plenty of compost. 

Cucumber, Marketmore

A standard slicing cucumber with thick skin.  Prolific with a good flavor. Needs full sun, plenty of compost and water.

Eggplant, Galine

A mostly traditional Italian eggplant -- egg-shaped, dark purple, but a little smaller.  Produces better than most Italian varieties in cooler weather, but needs full sun and lots of compost.

Eggplant, Orient Express

A Japanese-type eggplant — long and thin with a thin skin.  Produces well even in cooler weather, but needs lots of compost and full sun.

Kale, Black Magic

An Italian flat leaf kale, also known as dino kale,  tuscano, or  black cabbage.  Will produce through the fall.  Harvest older bottom leaves first, leaving young top leaves to continue growing.  Needs full sun, plenty of compost and a lot of space.

Kale, Winterbor

The very popular "curly" kale.  Very hardy and will produce through the fall.  Harvest older leaves from the bottom first, leaving young top leaves to continue growing.  Needs full sun, plenty of compost and a lot of space.

Okra, Clemson

The classic green okra.  One plant will yield 2 -3 fruits a week.  Fruits should be harvested 2 or 3 days after they begin to form — older fruits will be woody.  Needs full sun, lots of compost and hot weather.

Pepper, Shishito

A small Japanese pepper typically harvested when green with thin walls.  Peppers are savory, although it’s said that one in every ten peppers is hot. Plant needs full sun and plenty of compost.  Plants tend to sprawl and may need to be supported.

Classic hot green chile pepper.  Typically harvested when green, but can also be picked when red for fruitier flavor. Needs full sun and plenty of compost.

Summer Squash, Costata Romanesqueo

A green and white striped Italian heirloom known for its excellent sweet and nutty flavor. The vegetative grownth of this variety tends to be very unruly and a little disease prone, so give it plenty of space and plenty of compost.

Summer Squash, Dunja - zucchini

A prolific grower of straight green fruits.  Harvest when fruits are still small — around 8 inches, as larger fruits will be spongy with large, tough seeds.  Plants are large and need plenty of space, full sun, and compost.

Herbs

Basil, Rutgers Prospera DMR

An Italian sweet basil with good disease resistance.  Pinch flowers to maintain plant growth.  Should produce until tempertures dip past 45 degrees. Needs full sun and plenty of compost.

Basil, Thai

A tender herb that adds a distinctive sweet and licorice flavor to noodle and rice dishes. Plants flower quickly, but will keep growing if flowers are pinched. Plants need a lot of space (or a big pot), full sun, and plenty of compost.

Basil, Lettuce Leaf

A mild basil with huge, crinkly leaves. Used for sandwiches, wraps, stuffing, and soups. Needs full sun and plenty of compost.

Chives, Common

Onion-y herb that is used in salads, dressings, sauces.  Will overwinter.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Chives, Garlic

Similar to common chives, but with a strong garlic favor. Used widely in Asian cuisines they'll make a flavorful addition to soups, sauces. Does not overwinter as realiably as common chives. Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Cilantro, Calypso

Tender herb.  Prefers cool temperatures — will make a seed head when roots get too hot.  Leaves are used in sauces and salads — seeds are used fresh or dried as corriander.  Needs full to partial sun and average fertility.

Dill, Greensleeves

Tender herb.  May self-seed and return the following year.  Leaves are used in salads and sauces — seeds are used as seasoning. Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Lemon Balm, Common

Member of the mint family with a lemon-y flavor. Used in teas and salads.  Will overwinter.  Will spread aggressively — best grown in a pot.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Marigold, Red Metamorph

Small burgundy flowers develop streaks of orange as the weather gets hotter. Plants have a citrus-y scent that deter pests in the garden. Flowers are edible, but fairly bitter. Needs full sun and good fertility.

Marjoram, Common

A cousin of oregano with a milder flavor. Used in sauces, dressings, and teas. Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Mint, Common

Common mint used in teas and to flavor... everything!  Should overwinter. Will spread aggressively — best grown in pot.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Oregano, Common

Woody herb, used in sauces and soups.  Easy to dry.  Will overwinter.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility. 

Parsley, Giant of Italy

Large, flat Italian parsley.  Don’t disturb roots when planting.  Parlsey will produce through the fall.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Rosemary, Common

Woody herb, used with meats and sauces.  Will not overwinter outside.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Sage, Common

Woody herb, used in sauces and soups.  Will overwinter.  Not the same variety used for smudges.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.

Sorrel, Common

An early spring herb with green, lemony leaves that can be used in salads, sauces, or to famously stuff a whole chicken! Will bolt as soon as the weather gets hot, but may provide another harvest in the fall. Will overwinter. Needs partial to full sun and good fertility.

Woody herb, used with meat, soups, and sauces.  May overwinter if well mulched.  Needs partial to full sun and average fertility.
